Misa Ato - The Eye of Photography

Issue21
"Say nothing, close your eyes, let the detail go up alone to emotional awareness" – Roland Barthes
Thus, the works presented in the "Issue21" series revolve around the places of absence that submit us to silence. They approach architecture, its constructive systems, its functional or symbolic role to deal with questions inherent to it such as those of order and chaos, of the durable and the ephemeral, of abandonment and of becoming, of forgetfulness and memory. This photographic work, sometimes relating to a form of archeology, offers perspectives and points of view on the modern world that lead us to reflect on our relationship to it.

The relationship of the void between the built spaces is the base of my artistic approach. I draw from it a plastic and semantic material from which I build my graphic universe. It’s not the faithful reproduction of the building that matters to me. While respecting its origin, its nature, its function, I look for new forms. I create tension by disparate shadows, by divergent lines to create a dynamic and harmonic balance. An architect by training, I apprehend the photographic medium following the process of architectural design. I analyze the place to soak up its essence and try to collect a small detail without ever losing sight of the unity of the whole. Position myself as an observer of space, like the gaze of a wanderer immersing himself in an unknown place.

A way to initiate a passage through the sound of silence, the indiscernible which little by little reveals history, memory, time by relying on shadow and light, shades of gray and geometry of the task and the line.
