Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is on everyone’s lips and its current possibilities are often overestimated – if only because the term image-thinking robots evokes, for example the independent supercomputer HAL from "2001: A Space Odyssey". On the other hand, it is easy to overlook the extent to which the technology already intervenes in everyday processes, not least in imaging processes. These include automatic image optimization in Photoshop & Co. as well as in cameras, such as the minimization of optical aberrations, noise removal or HDR mapping. As well as: Computational Imaging – the calculation of photo-realistic images in the computer.
The AI is particularly powerful in time-consuming routine tasks, for example when searching for certain image content. AI-supported image management can not only save a lot of time. It is also able to fish out individual motifs from a large stock of images that we would not find by hand in case of doubt or that we have already forgotten. A company that has dedicated itself entirely to the search for the literal treasure in the Bildersee is the Pattern Recognition Company (PRC), a software company from Lübeck.
