Beeminder ♥ The StoryGraph

It’s official! The Beeminder StoryGraph integration! The StoryGraph is basically a better, nerdier version of GoodReads.

I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I really (really really really) love books and reading. I’ve talked about it on the blog before, I talk about it in the forum, I have umpteen different reading goals… and of course I breathe books.

Well, it’s my birthday month and this year I’m getting the best present: that’s right, Beeminder are integrating with a website tracking reading. Enter The StoryGraph!

Why should Beeminder fans use The StoryGraph?

The clue is kind of in the name: The StoryGraph! They have all kinds of stats and charts to delight the heart of a data nerd. Do you want to know what proportion of the books you read are fiction, or paperbacks, or have an inspiring mood? Graphs about your reading progress this month/year?

Track your reading over time and you’ll get access to a wealth of data about your reading habits. I actually sometimes compare my page progress to Beeminder graphs or my mood tracker’s graphs, in order to get insight about how they impact one another!

The StoryGraph also has yearly challenges for page count and/or number of books, as well as challenges created by the community on more or less any theme you can imagine. I’m running one myself, the TBR Reduction Challenge, which helps track a challenge from a popular blogger. Buddy reads are a recently-added option as well: Beeminder users could even set up buddy reads for Beemindery books like Katy Milkman’s How to Change (Danny reviewed it back in December).

In short, it’s a haven for the book nerd who happens to like data, and it’s growing and improving all the time.

I’m from The StoryGraph, and I want to try Beeminder!

Welcome aboard! You might want to check out our getting started guide in our Help Docs, and then get yourself signed up. You can make a StoryGraph goal from the goal creation flow, or start right here to jump into goal creation linked up with The StoryGraph.

So how do I use it with Beeminder?

We’re starting out simple. If your profile is public, you can beemind your number of pages read. We’ll start by pulling in your current number, and then each day we’ll grab your current total, plotting it on an odometer goal for you. To add data, just go to The StoryGraph and mark books as read, or add reading progress to a book you have marked as currently reading.

On the Beeminder side, it’s all automated.

If the pages-read metric isn’t currently exciting to you, we’d love to hear what is. Let us know about what you dream of tracking, and we’ll see what we can do and potentially add more metrics!

About

Beeminder is goal-tracking with teeth. We plot your progress on a graph with a Bright Red Line (formerly Yellow Brick Road). If your datapoints cross that line, we take your money.

The Beeminder blog is a hodgepodge of productivity nerdery and behavioral economics written by the founders and various friends.

Does Beeminder sound super crazypants? Just confusing? One of the first things you may want to check out is our User's Guide for New Bees. Check out other posts we're most proud of by clicking the "best-of" tag below. If you're a glutton for honey, the "bee-all" tag has everything we still think is worth reading. Other good ones are the "rationality" and "science" tags, if you're into that.

Beeminder Community

Most of the action is in the Beeminder forum. Or if you want to be slightly social without risking getting distracted arguing on the internet, you can do pomodoros online in sync with other Beeminder users and productivity nerds in the Beeminder coworking room on Complice.

Akrasia

Akrasia (ancient Greek ἀκρασία, "lacking command over oneself"; adjective: "akratic") is the state of acting against one's better judgment, not doing what one genuinely wants to do. It encompasses procrastination, lack of self-control, lack of follow-through, and any kind of addictive behavior.
