Medieval World: Culture & Conflict – new magazine about the Middle Ages launches

A new bi-monthly magazine has been launched which engages with the rich history, art, and culture of the Middle Ages. Medieval World: Culture & Conflict aims to bring the Middle Ages to life and to all through well-researched and beautifully illustrated articles written by leading scholars and early career researchers in various fields of study.

Published by Karwansaray Publishers in print and online, this new magazine succeeds Medieval Warfare, which ran for 11 years. It highlights cultural activities in local and global contexts, historical figures and events, as well as political, religious, economic, and artistic facets of the Middle Ages. Each issue centers on a particular theme, and also includes special articles on cultural heritage, medieval myths and legends, as well as recipes and aspects of medieval courtly life, among other topics. The magazine also features a "News" section in the beginning, detailing recent discoveries and projects related to the Middle Ages, as well as a "Further Reading" section at the end with key publications focused on the theme.

The inaugural issue centers on the Holy Roman Empire at the end of the Middle Ages. Among the featured articles are pieces on Emperor Maximillian I, the Battle of Dornach in 1499, and the Hussites, all richly illustrated and with original maps. You can also read a sample article from the first issue: Kathryn Walton, "Putting a ring on it: Magical rings in medieval legend"

Alice Sullivan, editor of Medieval World: Culture & Conflict, explains "This is an exciting new publication that aligns with my broader efforts to bring excellent scholarship about the Middle Ages to all! As you will find, this magazine bursts with exciting, accessible, and excellent content about the history and material culture of the Middle Ages. The articles are illustrated with images of sites and objects from collections around the world, as well as original maps, drawings, and paintings."
