Stanley Kubrick masterpiece 'The Shining' reinvented as a David Lynch film
Stanley Kubrick, widely considered to be one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, provided a lasting impression on the development of cinema for decades.
Kubrick, whose final film Eyes Wide Shut was completed shortly before his death in 1999 at the age of 70, continues to be cited as a major influence on the careers of several critically acclaimed directors such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, the Coen Brothers and, of course, David Lynch. "I love Stanley Kubrick," Lynch once said when naming a list of his favourite films and directors. "I can watch his movies over and over," he added.
For many fans of Kubrick, the work of Lynch is right up there alongside him. Lynch, who himself has been described as "the renaissance man of modern American filmmaking" for his pioneering approach to cinema, is highly celebrated for creating iconic pictures such as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and more.
For filmmaker Richard Vezina, both aforementioned directors have played a massive part in forging his creative vision. "What would The Shining look like had it been directed by David Lynch?" Vezina asked himself. "Would it be a dream or a nightmare?" he continued before taking things into his own hands and creating a mash-up like no other. "Blue Shining combines both worlds in a playful manner by integrating elements from Lynch’s films into Kubrick’s movie to give the Stephen King classic a Lynchian atmosphere."
Blue Shining, as it has been named by Vezina, combines films such as The Shining, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire and more to create a unique combination of cinema’s most iconic filmmakers.
Vezina added: "With this mash-up, I didn’t mean to insinuate at all that The Shining would have been a better movie had it been directed by David Lynch. The Shining is a masterpiece, after all. The only goal of this mash-up is to entertain people. David Lynch has his own unique style, and I integrated excerpts from his movies to The Shining for fun only. Kubrick and Lynch are both geniuses, and their movies are self-sufficient. I’ll say it again: do not take this mash-up seriously."
